Portugal is the westernmost country in continental Europe.
Its territory, an integral part of the Iberian Peninsula, overlooking the Atlantic with 850 km of coastline mainly low and straight and borders to N and E with Spain.
Physical and climatic factors as well as historical and cultural help to divide the country into two very different regions: the North Atlantic climate and mountainous characteristics and south Mediterranean.
The climate is characterized by winds from moist Atlantic causing abundant rainfall especially in northern regions. To the south the climate is more Mediterranean.
In economics persist structural elements of fragility, as the strong dependence on traditional industries with low-tech the low rate of secondary schooling, the low share of investment in research and development.
